Is Your Household Water Usage Above Average?

In the United States, we are fortunate to have plenty of water, at least in most parts of the country. Yes, there are definitely drought-stricken areas that have to be especially careful with water usage. But, as a whole, Americans enjoy water in adequate supply.

Since our water supply is usually greater than our demand, many of us take water for granted and really have no idea how much we actually use. After all, it’s so easy to turn on the tap and have water immediately available for making coffee, brushing our teeth, washing our hands, and all the rest of our daily tasks. Let’s dig a little deeper into the water usage of an American family.

What’s the average water usage of a typical U.S. household?

Ultimately, the answer to this question depends on a number of factors, such as household size, types of appliances, and whether or not you have any leaky fixtures.

For example, a household of 6 uses far more water than an elderly widow living alone. Similarly, homes with modern appliances typically use less water due to water-saving features on new washers, dishwashers, toilets, and showers.

Overall, however, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the water usage of the average U.S. family is 300 gallons per day. Surprised? That’s a lot of water and remember, that’s just for the average household. Your own household could be above average if you have a larger family or if you use a lot of water for outdoor purposes such as a swimming pool or irrigation system.

Why does water usage matter?

If you live in a municipality where you have to pay for every gallon of water you use, you likely keep a closer eye on household water usage because it directly affects your monthly budget.

In other areas, how much water you use can be important when you consider environmental factors. For example, individuals living in areas of drought need to be conscious water consumers. Others may need to cut back simply because their own private well doesn’t have an unlimited water supply.

In any case, if we’re all using 300 gallons of water per day, more or less, it’s important that the water we use and drink is safe, quality water.

Enjoy high quality water right at home

The easiest way to ensure that the water you use is top quality is to manage your own personal supply. Whether your water comes from a private well or a municipal water source, your household water quality can be controlled with:

  • Water softeners – People living in areas with hard water will want to invest in a home water softener. With soft water usage throughout your household, you’ll enjoy softer skin and hair, protection against corrosion and scale buildup on fixtures and water using appliances, and a host of other benefits.

In areas where water usage is a concern, we recommend using Portable Exchange Tank Soft Water Service as this process uses less water than a traditional salt-based water softener.

  • Drinking water systems – Since a good part of the water we use every day is actually ingested, let’s do our best to make sure it’s contaminant-free. A home drinking water system, such as a Reverse Osmosis filtration system, ensures you get a steady supply of safe, great tasting water right from your tap.
